The rule will remain effective until a more permanent law aiming to prevent drug abuse at live music events is put into place. Though Time Warp has experienced unprecedented success in its home country, Germany, the Buenos Aires edition of the prized techno festival saw a shocking number of deaths and drug-related illnesses. The deaths of several young attendees in their 20s have shaken the electronic music community abroad, now standing as a threat to the future of dance music in Argentina. It remains to be seen whether a South American version of the RAVE Act will be implemented, or if the nation will take a more progressive approach in addressing drug consumption.
A ruling by municipal judge Roberto Andrés Gallardo also ordered all the night clubs in Bueno Aires to be closed this month because of the time warp deaths. The ruling is aimed towards clubs with electronic music because it associates with drug use. The clubs will not open until the city put a plan together to control the drug sales at these clubs.
Local club owners are very upset and say they will not follow the ruling and pointed out that the deaths occurred at a festival and not a nightclub.
“How do you obey a totally unconstitutional order like this one?” Jorge Becco, head of the Buenos Aires chamber of discotheque owners, told local television. “It’s like shutting the vegetable store because you found food poisoning at the butcher shop.”
