In an effort to protect Berlin’s nightlife due to an increase in property development, the Berlin government has pledged €1 million to assist clubs equip themselves with noise protection. The Parliament has agreed to fund renovations at clubs that includes sound-absorbing installations and noise barriers in outdoor areas as well as soundproofing windows for nearby residents.
Around 170 clubs have been forced to shut down since 2011 due to noise complaints. This is a chronic issue for clubs worldwide, including here in Los Angeles, because when a resident who lives near a venue complains about noise, then the resident usually wins their case against the venue.
The Berlin Club Commission spokesman, Lutz Leichsenring, said the following regarding protecting clubs, “In a densely populated city, where residential development is close to music venues, investment must be made in noise protection to ensure coexistence.”
