California’s proposed 4am alcohol change suffers major setback

This past Friday, the California Assembly Appropriations Committee gutted Senate Bill 384 which would have allowed individual cities to set their owner alcohol serving time cutoff.  The committee decided to rewrite the proposed bill to instead allow for the bill to only create a task force to study the issue rather than to allow for the cities and counties to vote.

Scott Wiener who sponsored the bill stated:

There’s no need to study anything. There’s nothing radical about letting local communities decide for themselves whether to let their bars and nightclubs go later. It’s embarrasing that California shuts down its nightlife so early. We’re not going to give up. Nightlife matters to our economy and culture, and California’s one-site-sits-all approach to closing time needs to be reformed.

Hopefully however this bill continues it ultimately ends with the cities and counties being able to make their own rules.
