Famed Berlin nightclub Watergate to close at year’s end

Berlin’s iconic nightclub Watergate has announced its permanent closure, set for the end of 2024, as reported by Resident Advisor. The venue’s shutdown is primarily attributed to economic challenges, with operating costs becoming unsustainable.

Co-founder Ulrich Wombacher highlighted several factors contributing to this decision, including inflation, energy expenses, overall cost increases, and notably high rent. He also noted a shift in nightlife trends, with larger events and festivals gaining popularity over traditional club experiences.

Wombacher expressed that rather than risking financial instability, the club has chosen to end operations while still in control of the situation. As a result, Watergate will not extend its lease beyond 2024.

Established in 2002 in Oberbaumbrücke, Berlin, Watergate has been a significant fixture in the electronic music scene for over two decades. It has hosted numerous renowned DJs and producers throughout its history.

The club plans to commemorate its final year with a series of closing events from October through December, featuring performances by notable artists. Specific dates are yet to be announced.

This closure follows that of another Berlin club, Renate, which shares the same property owner as Watergate. Both venues cited similar financial pressures and rent increases as reasons for shutting down.

Watergate had previously faced uncertainty in 2017 when its rent doubled, prompting efforts to expand its offerings to manage the increased costs.
