“I first heard, and heard about, ambient music on the b-side of David Bowie’s ‘heroes’. As much as I’ve loved writing songs and dance tracks I’ve always been obsessed with the ways in which ambient and instrumental music can transform the space in which their being listened. i also really appreciate the subtle and at times un-demanding qualities of ambient music, and the ways in which it can unconventionally reach people emotionally.” – Moby
Moby will release ‘Hotel: Ambient’ for purchase and free through mobygratis on December 16th. ‘Hotel Ambient’ is the very limited edition, long out-of-print, remastered version with previously unreleased tracks and as a companion bonus disc to his 2005 album ‘Hotel’. The album is said to sum up Moby’s roots that links Brian Eno and Detroit techno pioneer Derek May.
Moby will debut live performances devoted to his ambient sounds on December 16th at the Masonic Lodge at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, CA and a fundraiser for the Integratron in Joshua Tree on December 21st (sold out). Moby’s music will be accompanied by visuals created by Moby specifically for the show on three large screens. The visuals will include archival footage from previous collaborations with legendary filmmaker David Lynch that will be manipulated and processed live by visual artists.
“The idea is that the show starts very quietly, then slowly builds,” Moby says. “By the end, it’ll be more dance oriented – not hands-in-the-air raving, though, but more experimental. Through the course of the set, there’ll also be ambient reworking’s of my better-known songs like ‘Porcelain,’ ‘We Are All Made of Stars,’ and newer ones like ‘Almost Home.”
Tickets for his December 16th show at the Masonic Lodge in Los Angeles, CA are available here.
