The San Bernardino County Supervisor, Janice Rutherford, recently proposed to end raves at the county-run San Manuel Amphitheater. Since electronic dance music festivals had stopped at the National Orange Show Events Center due to complaints from neighbors of high drug use, noise, and loitering, the chances were high that they would end at San Manuel as well.
Three of the five Board of Supervisors met yesterday and voted to reject the proposal, so the contract remains with Live Nation. Live Nation’s partner, Insomniac, can continue the annual Beyond Wonderland and Nocturnal Wonderland raves at the San Manuel Amphitheater. The vote was originally set to take place first in May then pushed to June 14th. We then spoke with Scott Vanhorne, communications director for Rutherford, who informed us of the vote being pushed back to June 28th. Ravers and those who gain financially from the events, like hotel operators, pleaded for the parties to continue. But those in the medical field who see an influx of overdose patients from the events argued in favor of ending the deal.
Although another motion by Rutherford was approved, which is to scale back the 2am curfew to an earlier time. Live Nation originally had a curfew of 11pm, but was able to extend it to 2am on the condition that they would keep it down. Neighbors have complained that they are severely impacted by the sounds emanating from the venue. A new curfew still needs to be negotiated and approved by the board, and it appears a midnight ending time may be in order to make all parties happy.
