Three decades after first trying to capture the full atmosphere of a room and not just the music playing in it, Jeff Mills has gotten there. Apple Music has released Jeff Mills Live at Knockdown Center, Mar 14, 2026, an immersive Spatial Audio document of the New York stop on his Live at Liquid Room 30th Anniversary Tour, arriving in two parts — Pt. 1 out now alongside a set from Ken Ishii, with Pt. 2 following October 9 alongside a set from Joey Beltram, both of whom played Knockdown Center that same night.
The release traces directly back to Mills’ original Live at the Liquid Room, recorded at Tokyo’s Liquid Room in 1995 and released the following year. Widely regarded as one of the most influential DJ mixes ever committed to tape, it redefined what a recorded DJ set could sound like and later earned a rare perfect 10.0 retrospective score from Pitchfork. At the time, Mills placed six to eight microphones around the venue hoping to capture the full room, not just the direct feed from his mixer, but format limitations forced Sony Music to flatten the final release down to stereo. The original didn’t get a proper digital release until 2025, when it arrived exclusively on Apple Music.
The Knockdown Center mix finally closes that loop. For this recording, Apple Music placed 14 microphones throughout the venue’s 20,000-square-foot main hall, capturing the crowd and room ambiance around Mills’ direct stereo mixer feed. Critically, the music itself wasn’t artificially spread across the Atmos channels to create a fake sense of space — the Spatial Audio mix instead preserves the actual physical layout of the night, with Mills positioned at the front and the crowd’s energy surrounding him exactly as it happened.
“I was trying to do this 30 years ago,” Mills told MusicTech. “This is what we were planning for.” He described the release as something bigger than a straightforward recording: “It’s a live recording. It’s not just music. It’s the ambiance of the room. The people.” Mills has said he shapes his sets specifically to draw reactions out of a crowd, and those voices and responses remain woven into the finished mix rather than scrubbed out.
Musically, the two-part mix moves through decades of techno history, threading Mills’ own productions — “The Bells,” “i9,” “Utopia,” and “Life Cycle” among them — alongside tracks from Robert Hood, Surgeon, DJ Funk, Marcel Dettmann, Steve Bicknell, and Beltram himself. Of every performance across the full anniversary tour, this is the sole set chosen for a Spatial Audio release. The complete recording also aired in full on Apple Music Club Radio.
