One Dead, Five Wounded in Shooting at Swiss Rave in Aarau

A shooting at a rave in the northern Swiss canton of Aargau left one person dead and five injured in the early hours of Sunday, August 30, 2026, according to local police and media reports.

The shooting occurred at “Aarau Rave VOL. 7,” which was taking place at the Schachen horse racing track in Aarau’s Schachen district — the canton’s capital, located about 29 miles west of Zurich. Police were alerted around 2:30 a.m. local time, and the shooting took place right after the event had ended.

The victims: Aargau cantonal police said a 22-year-old woman died of her injuries at the scene. Four men and one woman, aged between 24 and 27, were hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to severe. Police did not release victims’ names in line with Swiss privacy rules, but Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni later identified the woman killed, along with two other victims, as Italian citizens — naming her as Maria Spinelli.

Police said they were still looking for potentially more than one suspect, and a spokesperson described the search as continuing “nonstop at full speed.”

Swiss paper Blick reported that attendees initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks until someone shouted for everyone to get down.  Swiss DJ Tekibo, who had performed at the event, called it “absolutely heartbreaking” in an Instagram post.

This remains a developing story — police had not announced an arrest as of the latest reports.
