Ministry of Sound Wants to Find Its Next Resident DJ — And You Get to Vote

Ministry of Sound is throwing open the doors to The Box for something it’s never done before. The London institution has announced Boxed In, a live-streamed DJ competition built to hunt down the next wave of dance music talent — and this time, the crowd doesn’t just watch. It votes.

The whole thing goes down on 13th September, streaming live on Twitch from inside The Box, the club’s freshly renovated main room. Six emerging DJs will go head to head across a marathon 12-hour stream, each paired with an established mentor who’ll walk them through a gauntlet of challenges. This isn’t just about who can blend two tracks cleanly — contestants will be tested on stamina, crowd control, booth etiquette, and how deep their musical knowledge really runs.

The twist: viewers aren’t passive. Live voting and real-time audience reactions will actually shape how the challenges unfold, putting the outcome directly in the hands of whoever’s watching from home.

The Prize

Whoever comes out on top doesn’t just get bragging rights. The winner walks away with a Ministry of Sound residency — the kind of opportunity money genuinely can’t buy — covering both global and club shows, plus £25,000 in equipment, studio time, and artist development. Basically everything an up-and-coming DJ needs to actually build a career off the back of one night.

Meet the Mentors

Six heavy-hitters are lending their name and experience to the project, spanning genres, generations, and a combined social following in the millions:

Each mentor will guide one contestant through the entire process, meaning the pairings themselves are shaping up to be half the story here.

Ministry of Sound says Boxed In is a direct response to how narrow the path into DJing has become. Electronic music has always run on new blood, but the traditional routes in — residencies, radio slots, word of mouth — have tightened up considerably in recent years. Boxed In is the club’s attempt to build a visible, participatory alternative: put unsigned talent in front of a global audience and let the crowd decide who breaks through.

Ministry of Sound Managing Director Caitlin McAllister put it simply: the label has always been about backing new talent, and this is their way of doing that for a new generation — giving brilliant, unseen artists a real shot at a global stage.

How to Apply

Applications are open now. To throw your hat in, you’ll need:

  • A 60-second video explaining why you deserve a spot
  • A 15-minute mix uploaded to SoundCloud

From there, 30 applicants get shortlisted, and the six mentors run their own elimination process until each has picked one contestant to mentor through the live stream.
