A quarter-century after writing one of electronic music’s most instantly recognizable records, Darude has finally reworked it himself. “Sandstorm Storm 25 Mix” marks the first official remix of “Sandstorm” in more than two decades, out now via the Finnish producer’s own label, Vibing Out.
The track has never lacked for unofficial attention — over 25 years, “Sandstorm” has spawned hundreds of edits, mashups, and bootlegs. But its lead melody and chord progression are so deeply tied to the song’s identity that even producers who’ve wanted to touch it have mostly left it alone rather than risk breaking what makes it work. With more than a billion global streams, multiple Gold and Platinum certifications, and over 322 million YouTube views on its music video, “Sandstorm” has become something bigger than a dance track — a go-to hype anthem for the FIFA World Cup, NFL, Copa America, and the 2024 Paris Olympics, and a fixture in gaming culture through EA Sports, Fortnite, and DOTA.
Given that history, it’s fitting that the first person to officially remix it is the man who wrote it. The Storm 25 Mix actually started as a live-set rework built specifically for Darude’s STORM 25 anniversary tour, a run celebrating 25 years of his catalog. To build it, he first rebuilt the original “Sandstorm” from scratch, down to the exact hi-hat and Supersaw pad, before reworking the key sounds into something new. The core melody stays intact, but the new version leans into big-room energy, folds in melodic techno elements during the drop, and adds orchestral textures to the breakdown.
“So many talented people have taken their own swing at it, while a lot of producers I admire have told me it’s simply too risky to touch,” Darude said. “But this one is personal. It’s the track that started everything for me and my career, and after 25 years, it felt like the right time to take it somewhere new.”
