Suspect arrested in assault captured on video at Rüfüs Du Sol show

Julio Cesar Lopez Zavala, 23, was arrested by Pasadena police personnel Thursday in Hawthorne, California, in connection with a brutal assault that occurred during a sold-out Rüfüs Du Sol concert at the Rose Bowl on August 16, 2025.

According to victim Shelby Elston, Zavala allegedly became enraged after a drink was spilled on him. Elston, who traveled from Phoenix, Arizona, said Zavala initially stormed off, only to return half an hour later screaming threats at her and her fiancé.

While she was trying to de-escalate the situation, Zavala allegedly punched her in the face, knocked her unconscious and caused serious bleeding. Two others were also viciously punched by the outraged man, which was all captured on video.

The violent altercation was recorded by other concertgoers and quickly went viral on social media, helping investigators identify the suspect.

Pasadena police said video footage and various tips from the public allowed detectives to identify the suspect. The widespread circulation of the assault video on social media platforms proved instrumental in the investigation.

Authorities confirmed that Zavala faces felony battery with great bodily injury, felony assault with great bodily injury, and misdemeanor battery charges. Formal charges against Zavala are pending review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

The incident occurred during a sold-out show by the Grammy Award-winning Australian electronic music trio Rüfüs Du Sol at the iconic Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena. The band responded to the incident earlier this week on social media expressing their disappointment with the incident.

The assault has drawn widespread attention both for its severity and because it was captured on video during what should have been an enjoyable musical event. The case highlights concerns about concert safety and the role of social media in both documenting incidents and assisting law enforcement investigations.
