Kygo, The King of Tropical House Blends Past and Present in Golden Hour

With the worldwide pandemic keeping us all from seeing our favorite DJs live this summer and heading to popular EDM destinations like Ibiza, Miami and Croatia, most DJs are spinning virtually for us so we can keep our bodies and souls grooving.  But there is one DJ that makes us feel the summer vibe like no other, with his tropical vibes helping us all find our beach during quarantine.

The 28-year-old Norwegian DJ Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll, aka Kygo, just dropped his third studio album, Golden Hour, in May, with hits that range from a new collaboration with Kim Petras on the single Broken Glass with its flawless vocals to a blast from the past remix of Whitney Houston’s cover of Steve Winwood’s 1986 feel good hit Higher Love, that made music history last year when it delivered the late singer her first posthumous Billboard Hot 100 hit, to a stab at country collab with Zac Brown.

The superstar beatmaker/producer is no stranger to pepping up the past with his tropical beats as was evident from the outrageously popular remix he did of Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing. Our EDM Life staff got to hear him spin this live with guest vocals provided by Jaime Foxx, who dropped in on the DJ’s set during the launch party for his KYGO brand headphones last year at Dream Hollywood’s luxe rooftop lounge, The Highlight Room.
On Monday, Kygo announced on Twitter that he is teaming up with the iconic Tina Turner on a remix of her 1984 smash What’s Love Got To Do With It.

Wrote the Norwegian DJ and producer on Twitter: “Can’t believe I’m releasing a collab with @LoveTinaTurner this Friday! ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’ is one of my all time favorite songs. It feels surreal to get the opportunity to work with such a legendary artist. Can’t wait for you all to hear it.”

In 2012, What’s Love Got to Do with It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. With his prowess at presenting the past, no doubt Kygo will make lightning strike twice with another all-time legend, Miss Turner. The official collab drops this Friday, July 17th.

While we won’t be able to celebrate summer in the traditional sense this year – at least we still have Kygo to make us feel like we’re vacationing somewhere tropical. Be sure to check out his latest album, Golden Hour, which is still hanging tight at the No. 2 position on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
